Wisdom teeth are the last molars to appear in the human oral cavity and occur in late adolescence and early adulthood. Often, the absence of enough anteroposterior and occlusal space in the jaws prevents proper eruption, resulting in the impaction of the third molars. Impacted wisdom teeth will sometimes appear underneath the gingival tissue and at unideal angles. The impacted third molars cause pain, swelling, infection, and damaging effects to the surrounding teeth.

An oral assessment, comprising a clinical test and digital images, is used to determine the need for extraction. The extractions are recommended in cases where the teeth are a threat to oral health and in instances where the involved teeth are symptomatic. Removing them early often results in a smoother recovery and reduces the chances of future complications.

The postoperative procedures involve the provision of clear instructions to be followed in order to facilitate the healing process and avoid problems associated with dry sockets and infection of the healing process. Most patients take a few days to heal and return to their daily normal activities.
